Masa & Mune are beings of unknown species who appear in both Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross. In both games, they are brothers who are associated with the legendary weapon Masamune. Mune is Masa's younger brother.
Masa & Mune, known in Japan as Grand and Leon, are twin beings of extreme power who appear in both CT and CC. In both games, they are brothers who are associated with the legendary weapon Masamune. Mune is Masa's younger brother.

In Chrono Trigger, Masa and Mune are first encountered in the Denadoro Mountains, during the quest to find the Masamune.  Initially appearing as children, Masa and Mune chide the party for seeking the blade, pointing out that humans never seem to understand the sword's true purpose, and generally see the Masamune as a prestigious or powerful weapon.  Masa is a slightly more childlike personality, whereas Mune is more philosophical and even slightly cynical.  The children transform into their natural forms (cloaked figures with pointed ears and yellow skin) and engage Crono and his allies as a test of their mettle.  Masa and Mune use the X-Strike dual-tech throughout the battle.
Chrono Trigger
Middle Ages
In Chrono Trigger, Cyrus and Glenn had met Masa & Mune when Cyrus wanted to obtain the Masamune.

When one of the twins has taken enough damage to fall, the battle stops. Masa and Mune observe that Crono and his companions are serious about their convictions, and that only Cyrus had ever made it this far in their test. They then fuse into a single, massively muscled creature and attack once more, making extensive use of wind techniques during the battle. During the fight, the creature will periodically charge up a vortex attack that can be dissipated by Crono's Slash Tech.
Later, when Crono's party seek the Masamune in the Middle Ages, they enter a cave on the Denadoro Mountains and see the sword. When they go to take it, a human child appears and asks if they want the sword. When the party tells him they do want it, he calls his big brother, Masa. Masa appears in a human child's form, and calls them buffoons for them thinking to make a name for themselves as "Hero" by grabbing the Masamune. He goes on to say that it is how you use a sword that matters, not that you have the strongest one. He asks Mune what they should do, who says that they should test them. They then transform into their real forms and fight the party. When they are defeated, Mune comments that they are tough and Masa says that nobody has lasted this long since Cyrus. They decide to fight them "for real". They say that with Masa's bravery and Mune's brains, they are unstoppable. They then merge together and transform into Masa & Mune.

Upon the defeat of the fused creature, Masa and Mune once more separate and transform into two children, and submit themselves to the party.  Mune's cynical attitude shifts slightly in defeat, and he asks Masa if Crono will 'fix us'. Masa reassures him, and the two vanish into the Masamune, which the party discovers is broken and must be repaired.
When the party defeats their combined form, they come apart and transform into their original forms. Masa says that it was fun fighting them, and Mune asks his brother if they will fix them and if they will find their proper owner. Masa says that it will be alright, so they go into the sword and allow the party to take the broken Masamune. When they take the sword, Masa says that he will make them ride the wind to the base of the mountain.

Later in the game (though, due to the time-traveling nature of Chrono Trigger, much before this first encounter), the party meets Masa and Mune in the magical Kingdom of Zeal.  They live there as mystics, along with their sister Doreen. This is before their spirits are bound to the Masamune (because it predates the creation of the Masamune).
Antiquity
When the party arrives in the Antiquity, they see Masa & Mune in Zeal along with their sister, Doreen. When the party goes to prevent the Mammon Machine from being activated, Melchior gives them the Ruby Knife. When they arrive at the Ocean Palace, Mune says that he feels "dark energy" filling the place and that something frightening stirs, and then disappears. As the party progresses through the palace, they see Masa, who says that Dreamstone has been used throughout the ages and that the Mammon Machine, the Pendant, and the Ruby Knife were made from it. He goes on to say that he and Mune are the "embodiment of Melchior's hope, sealed within" the Ruby Knife and that hope rests in their hands.

It is unknown how exactly Masa and Mune became the living spirits of the Masamune, as the twins predate the creation of the sword.  One possible explination centers around Enhasa, the Zeal city of Dreams.  When Crono plunges the Red Knife into the Mammon Machine (the event that creates the Masamune), Mune whispers to Crono that they (Masa and Mune) embody Melchior's dreams.  It is possible that Mune was not speaking figuratively; instead, he was explaining that, as a Guru of Zeal, Masa and Mune were literally manifestations of Melchior's powerful desire to help humanity.
When the party reach the Mammon Machine, Crono throws the Ruby Knife into the machine, which transforms it into the Masamune.

In Chrono Cross, the brothers (along with their sister Doreen) return as avatars of the Masamune.  Though less central to the game's storyline, the Masamune remains a powerful, though corrupt, weapon.  After defeating Dario during a sidequest, Masa and Mune will appear and reveal that the evil power which corrupts the weapon was allowed to enter because they were sleeping. Their big sister Doreen appears and, after chastising the boys for allowing this to happen, she fuses herself into the blade, along with the brothers and Serge's original weapon, the Sea Swallow. This creates the Mastermune, the most powerful weapon in the game.
Frog's sidequest
In Frog's sidequest, after he sees Cyrus' ghost, the Masamune comes off him and Masa & Mune appear, saying that his "emotional baggage" was weighing him down and that the Hero's strength is strength of will. Mune says that he can not save the world if he is dwelling on the past, and Masa says he is truly strong now, and now they can use all of their power. They enter back into the Masamune and Frog takes it back, commenting that it is now in its true form.

Masa & Mune, known in Japan as Grand (グラン Guran?) and Leon (リオン Rion?), are twin beings of extreme power who appear in both Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross. In both games, they are brothers who are associated with the legendary weapon Masamune. Mune is Masa's younger brother.

Chrono Trigger

Middle Ages

In Chrono Trigger, Cyrus and Glenn had met Masa & Mune when Cyrus wanted to obtain the Masamune.

When the party reach the Mammon Machine, Crono throws the Ruby Knife into the machine, which transforms it into the Masamune.

Chrono Cross

In the Japanese version, it's known as the Guran Doreen and is a play on words meaning "Grand Dream".
