Crono (クロノ Kurono?, "Chrono" in Japanese media) is the silent protagonist in Chrono Trigger. He lives with his mother (whose name is given as Gina in the Japanese version) in Truce village under the rule of the Kingdom of Guardia.

In 12000 BC, when the party is confronted with Lavos in the Ocean Palace of the Kingdom of Zeal, he sacrifices himself to save his friends, though he can be revived later in the game. With time travel, the player can manage to replace Crono in the moment before he dies with a copy received from the Millenial Fair in 1000 A.D, saving his life. While the other six playable characters have many lines of dialogue, Crono's responses to events are usually implied only through reaction and gesture, often for comedic effect. Crono speaks once in one of the endings to Chrono Trigger, saying just a few lines of dialogue. He uses a katana as a weapon and once he obtains magical ability, his Techs become lightning-oriented. In the original Japanese version of the game, Crono's element was Ten (?), which means "heaven". In the DS version of Chrono Trigger, Crono's element is translated to Light, which is more in line with the original Japanese translation.

There are some points where he's shown to have romantic feelings for Marle. At one point where he's knocked out, he has a dream where Marle is his wife. The PlayStation and DS versions of Chrono Trigger include an FMV scene at the end that shows Crono and Marle getting married. While a second FMV depicts the fall of Guardia Kingdom in year AD 1005, it is unknown what happened to Crono during this event. In the sequel, Chrono Cross, Crono makes an appearance alongside Marle and Lucca as apparitions of themselves as ghost children. It is probable that he and Marle are alive during the events of Chrono Cross.


Appearance

Crono has spikey red hair. He has bright blue eyes and wears a short sleeved green shirt underneath a light blue tunic. He always has a katana and a black belt, along with yellow pants, a pair of dark brown boots and gauntlets and a white headband around his forehead.

Biography

The Millennial Fair

In Present, Crono's Mother wakes Crono up and mentions that Lucca is waiting for him at Leene Square where the Millennial Fair is taking place. Crono heads over there where he accidentally bumps into a girl named Marle. He helps her up and retrieves her pendant that she dropped, whereupon she asks Crono whether she can tag along with him. They then participate in some of the fair's activities. After a while, an announcement says that Lucca's invention is ready, and they go to see it together.

Taban, Lucca's father, explains to a small crowd what Lucca's invention is – the Telepod, a "hyperdimensional transporter" where you step into a pod and be transported into another pod a few feet away. Lucca asks Crono to demonstrate what it can do. He steps in one of the pods, Lucca and Taban activate the Telepod, and then he is transported to the other pod. Seeing this, Marle says she wants to try. She steps into one of the pods, Lucca and Taban activate the Telepod, but then something goes wrong. Her pendant reacts to the transporter, and a portal opens which draws Marle in and then closes behind, leaving only her pendant. Crono picks up the pendant and plans to go after her by replicating the same event. Lucca and her father activate the Telepod, a portal appears, and Crono is drawn into it.

The Queen Returns

Crono comes out of the portal and appears in Truce Canyon and confronts a variety of enemies. He eventually comes out of the canyon and finds himself in Truce with different residents and buildings. He makes his way to Guardia Forest and reaches Guardia Castle. At the castle, he is confronted by some soldiers who tease him about his clothes and build, though they are stopped by Queen Leene who says Crono is her friend. She goes to the top of the castle where Crono meets her and finds out that "Queen Leene" is actually Marle. She says that she is glad Crono came for her, but then something happens to her. She feels as though she's being "torn apart" and that it is like she is dying. As Crono tries to save her, she disappears.

Crono heads downstairs where he meets Lucca. Crono tells her Marle disappeared, at which Lucca explains what she believes is happening. She says that they are in Guardia, though it looks a lot older than the Guardia they are from as they are in AD 600. Marle was mistaken for her ancestor, as Marle is actually Princess Nadia from the present and that Marle is a descendant of Queen Leene. Queen Leene was kidnapped and someone was supposed to save her. But now history has been changed. Marle looks so similar to Queen Leene that when Marle was found, she was presumed to be the queen and the search was called off. However, if the real queen is killed, then Marle may cease to exist. So Lucca and Crono decide that they must find and save the Queen to save Marle's life.

A Vanished Princess

Crono and Lucca exit the castle and head through Guardia Forest and make their way to Manolia Cathedral. Nuns are praying in the cathedral. Crono finds a hairpin one the floor, which Lucca recognizes as Guardia's royal crest. The nuns then turn into Nagas and fight Crono and Lucca, which the duo defeat. However, another Naga appears and attacks Lucca, at which a frog appears out of nowhere and slays the Naga. The frog explains that the fiends' lair is ahead and that he would like them to accompany him to save the Queen. They decide to go with the frog, and when Lucca asks his name, he says Frog will suffice.

The three look for a secret passage. Crono plays on the organ at which a secret door opens. The three enter it where they enter a large room of fiends. They defeat them all and eventually reach the end of the room. Here they see the Chancellor talking to Queen Leene. Frog tells the Queen that they will defeat the Chancellor, at which he reveals his true form – the fiend Yakra. The three fight and defeat Yakra. After defeating him, Queen Leene is now free and thanks Frog for saving her. Frog thanks Crono and Lucca for their aid, and the Queen suggests they go to Guardia Castle. Before they do that, they open a nearby chest which contained the real Chancellor. They then leave for the castle.

At Guardia Castle, King Guardia XXI is pleased at the Queen's return and the Chancellor suggests instituting a stricter criminal justice system to ensure fiends such as Yakra never threaten the royal family's safety again. Frog feels disgraced that he failed to protect the Queen and leaves the group. Crono and Lucca head upstairs, where Marle reappears. Marle explains that she could not see or feel anything, but that she knew she was someplace cold. Lucca calls her "highness", to which Marle realizes they found out she's a princess. She explains that she did not mean to trick Crono for not saying she is a member of royalty. She goes on to say that she is Princess Nadia and that her father is King Guardia XXXIII. She just wanted to go to the fair to have fun. As they leave the castle, the meet Frog at the entrance where he says his presence that endangered the Queen and that he can no longer remain at the castle. He notices Marle's resemblance to the Queen and comments on how uncanny it is. He tells Crono that he would make a great swordsman and leaves the castle.

The three leave the castle and head to where the portal had dropped them at Truce Canyon. Marle asks how they get home, to which Lucca reveals the Gate Key. She explains that she calls the portals "Gates" and are basically portals to the same location in a different time. However, these Gates are unstable, which is why they appear and disappear all the time. So she used the principle behind the Telepod to create the Gate Key, which locks the Gates in place. Lucca suggests that either the Telepod or something else made the Gate. They enter the gate and head back to AD 1000.

Homecoming

They come out of the gate at Leene Square. Marle asks if they want to come to Guardia Castle, though Lucca wants to find out why the Gate appeared in the first place. Crono and Marle leave without Lucca and head through Guardia Forest and then arrive at the castle.

The Trial

At the castle, the Chancellor rushes to Marle and says the castle thought she was abducted and that soldiers were combing the entire kingdom for her. The Chancellor sees Crono and believes him to be her captor. Soldiers surround Crono and knock him out.

Crono is put on trial in the castle's courtroom. The Chancellor serves as prosecutor, while Pierre represents the defense. Crono is charged with the abduction of Princess Nadia. People are brought in from the fair who interacted with Crono and Marle as well as people hired by the Chancellor to falsely testify against Crono. Eventually, Crono is guilty or not guilty depending on what he did at the fair, though if he is found not guilty he is sentenced three days of solitary confinement as punishment for aiding Marle in her flight from the castle.

Marle then enters the courtroom asking them to stop, though the King then enters and says what is done is done. Crono is then taken away to his prison cell.

The Chancellor brings Crono to the Warden of the Prison Towers and tells him Crono will be executed in three days. Royal Guards enter and knock Crono out. He then wakes up in his cell. Once his three days are up, an Officer and some Royal Guards take Crono to the guillotine. Just as Crono is about to be executed Lucca knocks out the Officer and his guards and saves Crono. As they escape, they free a man named Fritz who says his father runs the market in Truce and asks them to stop by if they are ever in the area. As they are near the exit of the Prison Towers, the Chancellor stops them and summons the Dragon Tank. They defeat the Dragon Tank and head into the castle. Soldiers surround them and as they are about to exit the castle, Marle says that they are her friends and that they must treat them as such. King Guardia XXXIII then enters and argues with Marle. Marle leaves the castle with Crono and Lucca and the Chancellor sends soldiers after them.

They head into Guardia Forest, though the soldiers corner them at a dead end. However, a Gate is nearby, which the three enter and are transported away, leaving the Chancellor confused at what happened.

Beyond the Ruins

The three come out of the Gate in a steel room, which Lucca comments that the civilization they are in seems pretty advanced. They exit the room and are outside in a destroyed world, with a fierce wind always blowing. The party is in the year AD 2300. They explore the nearby Trann Dome which hosts a small community of humans. They then go north through Site 16 fighting various monsters and eventually reach the Arris Dome.

At the Arris Dome, they meet an old man surprised to hear they went through Site 16, who says his name is Doan. The three enter the dome's basement, which Doan says they have tried previously but have always met with failure. In the basement, a large machine known as Guardian and two Pods. They defeat the machine and find a room full of rotten food due to a failure in the refrigeration. They find a dead body holding a seed, which they take. They go back a room and catch a rat that tells them how to activate a switch. They activate the switch and enter a new passageway that opened. Inside is a supercomputer which Lucca activates. A map appears which points to the next destination, the Proto Dome. Marle presses a button nearby which shows brief footage of the "Day of Lavos" in AD 1999. In the video, a large creature comes out of the ground, resulting in destruction raining all across the world.

Upon seeing the video, they realize that Lavos destroyed the world in AD 1999 and what they see in ADm 2300 is what remains of it. Marle, Lucca, and Crono vow to change history and prevent the world from being destroyed.

When they come up from the basement, they give the seed they found to Doan. He says that they are a strange bunch, to which Marle says it is because they have not lost hope. Doan says he will try his best to grow the seed and gives the three the Jetbike Key, which they can use to drive a jetbike at Site 32. Doan mentions that more powerful robots lie ahead and that they should not give up hope.

The three exit and head over to Site 32. There, they meet a robot named Johnny who challenges them to a race in the jetbike. They race against him and beat him. They then leave Site 32 and head into Proto Dome.

Inside Proto Dome, they find an inactive robot. Lucca says she will fix it and program it so that it won't attack them like the other robots they've encountered. When Lucca finishes fixing it, it activates and says its name is R-66Y. Marle tells Crono to give him a better name, so they name him Robo. Robo asks what happened to the dome as there were many humans and others like him before, to which Lucca explains something bad happened while he was inactive. Marle mentions a nearby door is sealed shut, and when Robo tries opening it, he finds that the power has been shut off. He says that the factory to the north contains an emergency power generator for the dome and that he can bypass security to activate it. However, he also says that the generator will produce power for only a short time and that someone must remain at the dome to open the door as soon as power is restored. Lucca or Marle stays behind and Crono, Robo, and Marle or Lucca head for the Derelict Factory.

The Derelict Factory

The three enter the Derelict Factory and confront a variety of evil robots. Eventually, Robo confronts six robots in similar appearance to him. He greets three of them, R-64Y, R-67Y, and R-69Y. However, one of them punches Robo and says he is defective and malfunctioning. R-69Y reveals that their assigned task is to eliminate all intruders. The six robots pummel Robo while Crono and Marle/Lucca can only watch. Robo tells them to stop, though they keep attacking and eventually Robo goes offline. One of the robots pushes him down a chute and they fight Crono and Marle/Lucca. The two defeat the robots and pick up Robo from the chute. They bring him back to the Proto Dome where Lucca fixes him. Robo asks Lucca if they are trying to change the world, which Lucca says that is what they plan to do. Lucca asks Robo what he wants to do after fixing him, though Robo says nobody has ever asked him that before. When Lucca is finished fixing Robo, he says that he wants to go with the three of them as there is nothing left for him in AD 2300 and that he wants to give the life on the planet a chance. They then enter a nearby Gate, though it acts strangely as they are teleported to another time.

The End of Time

The four arrive at odd location, standing on top of a pillar of light. They walk through it and find an old man. Lucca asks where they are, to which the old man says that it is not a question of where so much as when. He says that they are at the End of Time where Travelers lost in time's flow turn up. He goes on to say that when four or more entities of varying origins enter a temporal rift together, the torsion exerted on time's flow pushes them to the point of least resistance, which is the End of Time. He says that there have been a number of folks turning up here unintended recently like yourselves and fears that something is having a powerful effect on the very fabric of time. He goes on to say that there are roads at the End of Time to any time they could ever wish to visit, allowing them to call upon their friends at any time. However, they cannot travel in groups of more than three. So Crono leaves behind either Robo, Marle, or Lucca and carries on with the other two.

To get back to an era, the old man explains that the pillars of light they saw when they arrived at the End of Time connect the place to a different era. Once they have been through a Gate, they can use it to return to the End of Time whenever they wish. However, he cautions them about the Gate connected to a nearby bucket. The bucket contains a Gate to AD 1999, the Day of Lavos. Before Crono and the two he chose to come along with him leave, the old man tells them to enter a nearby door where they meet Spekkio, the Master of War.

Spekkio notices that Crono and his friends have something in them, which is why the old man let them through. He explains that a long time ago there was a kingdom where magic flourished. However, the people abused their powers, and ended up destroying the place. After that, there was not anyone left who could use magic except for fiends. Spekkio notices that they have inner strength as magic needs power of the heart. He goes on to say that there are four types of magic: Fire, Water, Light, and Shadow, though not everyone has the same type. He says Crono has Light, Marle has Water, Lucca has fire, and Robo cannot learn magic because he is not a living thing. He makes them run around the room three times and gives them their magic. As Crono and the other two exit Spekkio's room, the old man asks for them. The old man tells them they should go back to the Present but they are free to visit him whenever they need advice. The party goes into the pillars of light and returns to AD 1000.

Fiendish Folk

Crono's group ends up in Medina village in a house with a Green imp and a Blue imp, both are friendly. They inform the group that they are in a village of fiends. the other Fiends are hateful towards humans over Magus' defeat 400 years ago, and the group discovers he is the fiendlord who tried to summon Lavos. The friendly imps also inform the group that there is a nice human (Melchior) in a small cabin to the west. The group then tries to escape to the mainland and end up fighting many cave dwelling fiends in the Heckran Cave who worship Magus, eventually leading up to the boss Heckran. The group escapes to the millenial fair and goes back through the time gate to the Middle Ages to stop Magus.


The Hero Appears

After learning of Magus's plan to summon forth Lavos, Crono and everyone decide to make another visit to the Middle Ages. At the Zenan Bridge, where a war is being fought between Guardia and the Fiendlord, the soldiers are tired and hungry. Crono goes back to the castle and gets some food for the army. He then decides to help the commander by fighting, and faces several Skeletons as well as the boss Zombor. Crono and Co. can now freely walk across the Zenan Bridge, allowing visits to Dorino Village, Porre Village, the Cursed Woods, the Denadoro Mountains, and the Magic Cave.


Tata and the Frog

Crono and the party venture into the Denadoro Mountains, where they meet the two twin winds Masa & Mune. They tell Crono that he can have the Masamune if they can defeat him. He first fights them separately as Masa and Mune, and then they combine to form a much stronger boss, Masa&Mune. After beign defeated, you receive the Broken Blade... what a disappointment! Anyway, Masa & Mune will warp you to the bottom of the mountain for you.

Crono and Co. then go to Porre Village, where the so-called "Hero," Tata reveals that he isn't really what he seems. He just found the Hero's Badge on the ground and went around saying he was a hero for fame. He says sorry and gives you the Hero's Badge. The party ventures into the Cursed Woods, where they find Frog's secret hideout. Here, Crono gives Frog the Hero's Badge. Frog then gives you access to a chest containing the Broken Hilt - the other half of the Masamune! Crono notices the name "Melchior" inscribed into the hilt - he remembers that there was a man named Melchior in the Present in Medina Village, and travels there.Melchior tells Crono that in order to fix the Masamune, he would need a rare red rock called a Dreamstone, which hasn't been seen for millions of years. Hint hint, nudge nudge.


The Rare Red Rock

Crono and the gang warps to 65,000,000 B.C. - Prehistory, via the End of Time... and fall off a cliff. Shortly after landing, they are attacked by several Reptites of the green variety. The party gets tired, and is saved by a Prehistoric girl named Ayla. Ayla takes the group to Ioka Village, where she lives. She invites you to a party, and after partying for quite a while, Ayla offers you the Dreamstone if you can beat her in a drinking contest. When Crono wins, she gives it to him. When Crono wakes up, he finds that the Gate Key has been stolen! I mean, there was no way it could have been THAT easy.


Footprints! Follow

Crono, Ayla, and Marle/Lucca/Robo venture into the Forest Maze. They meet Ayla's future husband (although neither knows this at the time), Kino, who tells you that the Reptites stole the Gate Key! Crono and his party hurry through the Forest Maze, and find the entrance to the Reptite Lair. After making their way through the Lair, they confront Azala, the leader of the reptites. He asks what the Gate Key is for - if Crono tells him the truth, he calls Crono a liar. Either way, he summons the boss Nizbel. After defeating Nizbel, Crono gets the Gate Key back, and the party heads back to Ioka. Ayla leaves the party, and the rest of the party goes back to the End of Time via jumping off a cliff.

The Masamune

Now the Crono has the Dreamstone (woohoo!), he gives it to Melchior, who heads downstairs wondering how you got your hands on Dreamstone, and works on fixing the Masamune. If Lucca is in your party, she will help him too. When he finishes, he will give you the Masamune, which is unequippable at this time. Next, Crono and the party go back to Frog's hideout in the Cursed Woods, where they show him the Masamune. Frog, amazed, needs some time to think, so Crono and his party make themselves at home and go to bed. Through flashbacks, Frog reveals information about his past. As it turns out, he's Sir Cyrus's friend, Glenn, who was turned into a Frog by Magus.

When Crono and the gang wake up, Frog decides to join the party (woohoo!).The party then ventures to the Magic Cave, where an epic movie takes place in which Frog uses the Masamune to open it. The Masamune (Unequippable) now becomes the Masamune (equippable). Note that only Frog can equip the Masamune, as well as the Hero's Badge, which drastically increases the critical rate of the Masamune.


The Fiendlord's Keep

After exiting the other side of the Magic Cave, Crono, Frog, and Marle/Lucca/Robo end up outside The Fiendlord's Keep. Walking through the castle and finding only dead ends, Crono returns to the main room... only to be ambushed by Ozzie and his minions! After defeating his minions, Ozzie will leave. When Crono goes back to the dead ends, he finds the other two generals of Magus - Slash and Flea! After defeating Slash (Unarmed), Crono then defeats Slash (Sword). When he reaches Flea, he finds that it's a decoy! The real Flea was following him the whole time! When Crono defeats both generals, he goes back to the main room and warps deeper into the Fiendlord's Keep.

Ozzie is surprised that Crono made it that far, and attempts to summon Slash and Flea to defeat him. But, of course, they're dead. Ozzie, astounded, runs away. After making his way through a series of Ozzie's traps, Crono gives Ozzie a taste of his own medicine and traps him in a large pit in the floor. Next, he takes another warp even deeper into the Fiendlord's Keep.

Crono, Frog, and their third party member confront Magus, who they believe to be creating Lavos. After the battle, Magus explains that he only summoned Lavos - not created. Lavos had been sleeping below the world, draining its energy for eons. Then a powerful warp gate appears behind Magus and everyone is sucked into it.

Crono dreams about him being married to Marle (many gamers are confused as to the significance of thise scene, other than to show Crono is dreaming), and wakes up in Prehistory.

Forward to the Past

Crono wakes up in the Chief's Hut in Ioka Village to find that Ayla's people are at war with the Reptites again. After briefly explaining to Ayla that Frog is not to be eaten, he follows Ayla and Kino northwest to the ruins of a small village called Laruba. Here, the Reptites have invaded the village and killed everyone. The Laruba Chief is angry at Ayla and blames her for the recent Reptite attack., so Ayla runs off to the Dactyl Nest to fly to the main base of the Reptites, the Tyranno Lair. Crono follows her, and he, along with Ayla and Marle/Lucca/Frog/Robo, fly to the Tyranno Lair together.


Unnatural Selection

After a long and difficult journey through the Tyranno Lair, Crono, Ayla, and their third party member find their old friend Nizbel! Well, now it's bigger and better, and called Nizbel II. Nizbel II tells Crono & Friends that Azala is in the room up ahead. Crono and the party walk past Nizbel II towards Azala's room. Nizbel II, insulted by the fact that Crono's party is not scared by him, is angered and fights Crono. Because it couldn't have been that easy, right?

In the next room, Crono meets his other old friend, Azala! Azala runs away, and when Crono chases him outside, Azala appears with a new friend, the Black Tyranno. Crono defeats both of them, and meets yet another good friend of his, Lavos! Yes, at that moment Lavos appears for the first time every, as a comet, slams into the Tyranno Lair, and burrows into the ground, where it will stay for 65,001,999 years. Crono & Friends are rescued by Kino, and fly away on dactyls. They then go back to the ruins of the Tyranno Lair, where they find a time gate and jump inside.


The Magic Kingdom

After going through the Tyranno Ruins time gate, Crono and the gang end up in 12,000 B.C. - Antiquity. Here, the magical people (Enlightened Ones) live on beautiful floating islands in the sky. On ground level, the world is covered in snow, and the non-magical people (Earthbound Ones) live in a small cave, the Terra Cave, being mistreated by the Enlightened Ones with the exception of the princess, Schala. To get from island to island, the people use Land Bridges, buildings with portals in them, to get to the ground. They then walk across the ground to Skyways, buildings with portals in them, to fly back up to the islands. to climb up mountains, the Enlightened Ones have built portals inside small caves, leading to other small caves, to get up the mountain.

At the moment, Crono has access to a few places: the Terra Cave (though he can only reach the entrance at the moment), Enhasa, Kajar, the Blackbird (though it has no significance at the moment), Zeal Palace, and the various Skyways and Land Bridges. Seeing as Enhasa is closest to where he came out of the time gate, he decides to head there, where he finds a young boy, Queen Zeal's son Janus. Janus tells Crono & Friends that "the black winds howl, and one among you will soon perish." Crono, slightly creeped out, takes a different Land Bridge to ground level, and flys up another Skyway.

This is the main island. Here is where the Blackbird, a ship, is docked, where Kajar is located, and where Zeal Palace is located on a mountaintop. Crono and the party first go to check out the Blackbird, where they meet Dalton, who doesn't take too kindly to them. He, however, does not fight them yet. The party then heads to the magic city of Kajar. A strange Nu helps him find the Black Gemstone, an important item later in the game.

Next, Crono goes into a Small Cave in the side of a mountain, with a portal taking him to the middle of the mountain. He then goes into ANOTHER small cave, with a portal taking him finally to the top of the mountain where the Zeal Palace resides. Here, he meets the princess Schala, but someone says her presence is requested at the Ocean Palace, and she departs. Schala heads through a door, and Crono tries to follow her, but the door is sealed. Marle's pendant seems to react to the sealed door, but it will not open it. Disappointed, the party goes to the Mammon Machine, which also resides in the palace. The Mammon Machine is used to harness Lavos's power. Using it, Queen Zeal hopes to obtain immortality. What she does not realize is that the power of Lavos is too much to be controlled by a human. Anyway, Marle's pendant reacts to the Mammon Machine as well, and it glows red, giving access to sealed doors and chests. She uses it to get through the sealed door that Schala went through, where the party finds Schala, Queen Zeal, a strange Prophet, and... ah! Crono's old friend Dalton! Long time no see! Anyway, the Prophet informs the Queen that Crono and his party are a "bad omen," and the Queen tells Dalton to summon a golem to attack you. How friendly of her!

After defeating or losing to the Golem, Queen Zeal captures Crono and the party and subjects them to torture experiments. Schala attempts to free them, but it caught by the Prophet, who sends them back to 65,000,000 B.C. and forces Schala to seal the time gate.


To Break the Seal

Now sealed out of Antiquity, Crono and the party head back to the End of Time. They remember that they have seen several sealed doors and chests that can now be opened with Marle's upgraded pendant. After some treasure hunting, they head to the Keeper's Dome in the Future. They walk past a sleeping Nu and use Marle's pendant to find a giant ship called the Wings of Time, or the Epoch. Crono reads little notes about Belthasar's last days. Not knowing how to use the Wings of Time, he attempts to leave, but the Nu from before walks in with... the seats for the Epoch! There's something good to have in a ship! Seats! The Nu introduces himself as Belthasar, the Guru of Reason. He tells Crono and the gang how to use the Epoch, and they fly through time back to Antiquity! Take that, Dalton!


The Guru of Woe

Now that Crono and Friends are back in Antiquity, they head through the Skyway! Just kidding, it couldn't be THAT easy. The Skyway is sealed, so Crono goes north to the Terra Cave, home of the Earthbound Ones.

After meeting the Earthbound Ones and hanging out with them for a while, Crono goes to save Melchior, another one of the three Gurus trapped by Zeal. Melchior is trapped inside the Mountain of Woe, so Crono heads there, fighting Red and Blue Mudbeasts, as well as the boss Giga Gaia. After Melchior is freed, the mountain collapses and everyone flees back to the Earthbound Village. Melchior gives Crono the Ruby Knife, which is made out of the same red stone as the Mammon Machine. Melchior hopes it will be able to destroy it. After the collapse of the mountain, Schala rushes to the Earthbound Village to make sure everyone is okay. She vows to never activate the Mammon Machine again... too bad Dalton has a different opinion.


What Lies Beyond

Now that Melchior has given Crono access to the Skyway, Crono goes to the magic city of Kajar, where they sell new equipment. He then goes to the Queen's chamber once more to confront Dalton. After easily being defeated, Dalton flees into a portal and goes to the Ocean Palace. Crono follows him.


Lavos Beckons

Crono hurries through the Ocean Palace, fighting Zealot Mages, Monks, and Warriors. He finally reaches the new location of the Mammon Machine, where Queen Zeal attempts to summon Lavos and harness its power. Before Crono can stop her, Dalton summons the Golem Sisters. After the battle, Crono throws the Ruby Knife at the Mammon Machine, but it is too late. Crono attempts to fight Lavos, but is easily killed. The Prophet throws off his disguise and reveals himself as Magus, but he also fails to defeat Lavos. A dimensional vortex is opened, and the three Gurus, as well as Janus, are sent to different times.

Everyone (except for Crono) ends up in the Surviving Village. The land is flooded, and the Epoch is in the middle of the water. Crono heads to the Village Commons and talks to the survivors and the village Elder. Oh no! Dalton survived too, and he takes the party as prisoners on the Blackbird and steals the Epoch.

The New King

After being imprisoned by Dalton, the party decides to recover their equipment before attempting an escape. Just before finding a way, one of Dalton's Golem overlord attacks them, but it is unable to fight them due to the fact it is afraid of heights.They easily beat the Golem overlord and witness Dalton flying on a modified Epoch to use as his new vessel. The party confronts Dalton, while the latter gets transported away by one of his Golems' vortexes. With a new Epoch with flight capabilities, the group then decides to find a way to see if they can save Crono from dying.

The Time Egg

The Time Egg was given to the team by Gasper after Crono was killed by Lavos and later on at Death Peak it revives Crono.

Crono's fate is implied to in Radius's statement about the Kingdom of Guardia no longer being peaceful. Like Marle, he is very likely alive as referenced in Lucca's letter about her friends. A version of him appears as one of the Ghost Children three times. The first time, he states that the future in which Earth is ruined by Lavos is going to be brought back into being due to the interference of Serge, who caused the Home World and Another World split. The second time is in an illusory space at Terra Tower, in which Belthasar enlightens Serge's party about some of the affairs of the Dragons. Crono's final appearance in Chrono Cross comes immediately before the final battle of the game. Crono tells Serge that Wazuki was turned into Lynx by FATE, and along with his fellow "Ghosts," the other two members of the original time-traveling group, implores Serge to destroy Lavos once and for all.

Abilities

Typical among RPG protagonists, Crono is a well balanced character with no major weakness. His physical damage is respectable, along with his speed, health, and defense. Because he can equip some very strong weapons (including the Rainbow, the strongest weapon in the game overall, Lucca's Wondershot can do more damage but the damage it inflicts varying makes it less reliable), he's one of the main damage dealers. Crono possesses a variety of techs, which include offensive and support techs. Though he isn't as effective a healer as Marle is (she has a greater variety of healing techs), he can still heal for good amount of health, and he can cast Life on allies to revive them. For offensive techs, he can inflict both physical damage and magical damage, and his higher level magic techs hit all enemies. His highest level spell, Luminaire, is, along with Magus' Dark Matter, the strongest spell in the game.

As Crono's element is Lightning/Heaven/Light, he takes extra damage from Shadow element attacks.

Trivia

  • In the FMVs for the Chrono Trigger remake on the Playstation, Crono is noted by fans to resemble adult Goku from Dragon Ball Z. This is because Crono is designed by Akira Toriyama, creator of Dragon Ball Z.
  • Crono is the only character totally confirmed to be left handed.
  • Crono has no dialogue in the game (although in one ending he has a few lines of dialogue).
