Luminaire (シャイニング shainingu "Shining"?) is Crono's 8th-level Tech in Chrono Trigger. It is the most powerful magic spell in the game. Serge, the leading hero of Chrono Cross, casts a spell called Luminaire with similar animation, magical element, and damage qualities as Crono's tech.
Description[edit | edit source]
Levitating into the air, Crono spreads his arms. A green dome swells from the center of the screen and rises. At its optimal size, the screen flashes white and the dome dissipates, causing damage to all foes on screen.
Damage calculation[edit | edit source]
Damage = (Level + Magic) * 50 * 3.2 * (1 - Enemy's Magic Defense/102.4) / Enemy's Elemental Defense + Random Range
Strategy[edit | edit source]
As the most powerful tech damage-wise in Chrono Trigger, it dominates the battle field. Crono, however, has lower Magic Attack, than characters such as Magus and Lucca, and is seemingly wasted upon him, as his physical attacks are more worthwhile in battle. Equipping Crono with the Rainbow and Prism Spectacles can replace a reliance upon this tech. However, should this tech be used, the player can outfit Crono with the Silver Stud or Golden Stud, to compensate for Crono's low Magic Point count. Additionally, using Magic Capsules on him can also compensate for his low Magic Attack.
Enemy Tech[edit | edit source]
Luminaire is also used by Golem, Spekkio, Nu Guardian, and Steel Shade. The animation is identical to Crono's version of the Tech, minus one key factor: the caster does not levitate above the ground while casting it. Once-King Dalton has a Tech with very similar animation, called Plasma.
In Chrono Trigger (DS), the Steel Shade boss (a dark version of Crono) uses "Scintillation" (ミストレイジング?), which is effectively the same as Luminaire aside from its name.
Name Origin[edit | edit source]
- A luminaire is an electrical light fixture with one or more light-bulbs.
- It happens to be extremely similar in appearance to the spell Ultima in Final Fantasy. It serves the same function- being the most powerful single spell in its respective game. They may or may not be related. Since the Final Fantasy series is also created by Square Enix, Crono's tech may be inspired by it.
