Marle (マール Māru?, "Marl" in Japanese media) is the tomboy princess of Guardia. Her real name as the princess of Guardia is Nadia (マールディア Mārudia?, "Marldia" in the Japanese version), and she is often at odds with her father, the king. Bored of royal life in the castle, she slips out to the Millennial Fair in Truce. Here, she meets Crono and tries out Lucca's teleporter, which reacts with Marle's pendant and creates a time warp, sending her to 600 AD and kicking off the events of the game. She is characterized as vivacious, optimistic and strong-willed. Marle uses a crossbow as her weapon; when she gains the ability to use magic, she learns to use "Ice" elemental spells and very powerful healing magic. Later in the game, an optional sidestory occurs that fleshes out the troubles between Marle and her father.
The PlayStation version of Chrono Trigger includes an FMV scene at the end that shows Crono and Marle getting married. While a second FMV depicts the fall of Guardia Kingdom in the year 1005 A.D., it is unknown what happened to Marle during this event, although if Doan is her descendant, she probably survived. In the sequel, Chrono Cross, Marle makes an appearance alongside Crono and Lucca as apparitions of themselves as ghost children.
Chrono Cross
Marle's fate is implied to in Radius's statement about the Kingdom of Guardia no longer being peaceful. She is one of the Ghost Children at the Dead Sea and Opassa Beach.
Trivia
- Marle has the best healing techs out of any character in the game. She can easily cure to full health and bring characters back to life with full health too. She also has a nice array of good double and triple techs too.
- Marle has one of the more unique endings in the game. If you beat Lavos in the new game plus version after you save Queen Leene in 600 A.D., but before Chrono's trial in 1000 A.D., the future will be changed in a way nobody expected. Marle and Crono will return to the present where people will comment on how Marle is wearing a disguise. The princess and Chrono will return to the castle to discover what is going on, where they find that King Guardia the XXXIII and his daughter are now capable of jumping across the room in one hop. The king shows Marle a four hundred year old wedding film of her ancestor marrying Frog. In other words, she's now part amphibian, much to her dismay...
