King Zeal is a character in Chrono Trigger, rumored to have been King before the Fall of Zeal in Antiquity. Prior to the events of Chrono Trigger, he died of unknown causes. His wife, daughter, and son survived him.
Appearance
Although he is briefly mentioned in dialogue, King Zeal does not appear in the game and does not have a sprite. The blue hair and elvish ears of the other Enlightened Ones likely emerged in King Zeal. Since Schala and Janus grew to be powerful magicians, he too doubtlessly possessed an affinity for magic as well.
Biography
King Zeal dies shortly before the events of Chrono Trigger; his death leaves Queen Zeal emotionally susceptible to the growing effects of Lavos's energy as channeled through the Mammon Machine. One of the most interesting enigmas of the series is the nature, appearance, and power of King Zeal.
A bed-ridden woman in Enhasa mentions that after King Zeal's death, magic was "nourished" and the kingdom "advanced", suggesting he was either tyrannical in his approach to magic-use, or discounted the importance of it.
