The Fiends (also known as Mystics in the SNES/PS version) are magical beings who originated in the Kingdom of Zeal.

Nature

Fiends are inherently magical beings, some even able to become magic users. Fiends are not all of the same form, there being many different species or sub-races such as Imps, Demons, and Naga. Even with these physiological differences, all Fiends are the same due to their common origin.

Some Fiends are immortal, while others live ordinary lifespans.

History

The Kingdom of Zeal

Fiends were "created" by powerful mages in Zeal, usually as part of their experiments. After their creation, they served the Enlightened Ones as servants, guards, and sometimes even jesters.

When Zeal fell, the Fiends scattered. After magic died in the hands of mankind, the Fiends - now the only beings in the world who could still use magic - saw no reason to serve them any longer. Over thousands of years, this difference grew into animosity, leading to war.

The War with the Mystics

In the Middle Ages, the fiends waged an all-out war against humanity, intending to wipe them from existence. They were led by the Fiendlord, and fought ruthlessly until the time that their lord could bring to bear the ultimate weapon, Lavos.

Medina

In the Present, the only remaining group of Mystics live in Medina Village on the East Continent, where they await the return of the Fiendlord. After Magus is defeated in the past, the timeline changes so that the villagers now pray for the return of Ozzie. After Ozzie's defeat in his fort, the timeline changes again so that the surviving Mystics are now allies of mankind.
