Beach Bum is an enemy appearing in Chrono Cross. Found in Cape Howl and Lizard Rock (Home World), Beach Bum appears to swim as it walks into you. This behavior is useless, other than in water. BeachBum is one of the first enemies encountered in the game and is extremely weak as an opponent.
Battle and Strategy
During battle, Beach Bums generally attack with normal physical blows, throwing in the occasional AquaBall, an excessively over-powered Element for an enemy encountered early on in the game. BeachBums prefer to travel in pairs or completely alone, but they sometimes pair up with Opah Fish or SandSquirt.
Nu
The blue-tinged skin, the floppy arms, the rotund body, and the lackadaisical frown all bear a striking resemble to Nus, Fiends encountered in the game's prequel, Chrono Trigger. Unlike the BeamBums, however, the Nus speak in coherent sentences, are trusted enough to run shops in Kajar and Last Village, and serve as the guardians of the North Palace Ruins. Interestingly, the items sold by Nus are typically healing items; items stolen from or dropped by BeachBums are exclusively healing items as well.
Additional theories stem from the Beach Bum inhabiting the chamber beneath Belthasar's desk in the Viper Manor library. In Chrono Trigger, the Guru of Reason, Belthasar, built Epoch and stored it in a futuristic dome. He died several years before Crono investigates Keeper's Dome to retrieve the Epoch and finds a robotic Nu guarding the vessel. After Crono and his friends alter the timeline, Belthasar ends up in Termina. In a secret chamber beneath the sage's desk resides a Beach Bum guarding the remains of what is clearly the Epoch, assisting the idea that BeachBums and Nus are variations of the same creature.
Name Origin
Beach Bum are found near the craggy ponds north of Opassa Beach and sport somewhat lazy (or bum-like) body language and features. The name probably combines these two key features in the enemy.
