The Lantern Jaw is an enemy in Chrono Cross. Lantern Jaws are animated floating ornaments, and take on the appearance of a pair of intricately-patterned casings joined together through sets of teeth-like rings. Found exclusively in the sewers of Viper Manor (Another World), Lantern Jaws are never known to appear alone, and instead accompany Spearfishers into battle.

Battle and Strategy[edit | edit source]

As afore-mentioned, Lantern Jaws will only make their appearances in pairs when the player engages Spearfishers in battle. They attack by first floating up to their targets before swiveling in the air and crashing into said target. This will essentially inflict fairly heavy amounts of damage. They are also capable of using a small range of Red elements, such as MagmaBurst and Inferno. Lantern Jaws possess a unique tech as well, which is that of DeathSaucer. DeathSaucer enables Lantern Jaws to behave like flying saucers, which is capable of inflicting fairly heavy amounts of damage in the process.

Name Origin[edit | edit source]

Lantern Jaws basically take on the role of lanterns in the dark and dank atmosphere of the Viper Manor sewers, as they are known to emit flame-like energy in their attacks. Coupled with the fact that the casings which make up the Lantern Jaw are connected with teeth-like objects set in rings, the name is hence a befitting one.

The Japanese name of the Lantern Jaw, Festive Ornament, directly refers to the unique design of said enemy itself, whereby it resembles an ornately-shaped object more than an actual creature.
