Mantarreys can be captured and added to the pool of Doppelgangs performed by Sprigg.

Battle and Strategy[edit | edit source]

Mantarreys never appear on the over-field alone, and instead accompany other enemies, such as the Lagoonate, Puffy and Sidesteppa into battles. Mantarreys attack by head-butting their foes, which may inflict heavy amounts of damage in the process. They are also known to utilize a small range of Blue elements, though they also use these sparingly. Mantarreys possess a unique tech of their own, which is that of FlyLow. FlyLow allows Mantarreys to glide through the bodies of selected targets, which has the potential to inflict heavy amounts of damage in the process. As a result, it is advised for the player to exercise caution when facing these foes in battle, and to attempt killing them off as soon as possible.

Name Origin[edit | edit source]

The name of this enemy, Mantarrey, is a play on the words manta ray, which, incidentally, is the name of an actual creature in real life. The manta ray (Manta birostris) is the largest species of rays in the family Myliobatidae. Manta rays are exceptionally graceful swimmers and appear to fly through the water on their large wings. Mantarreys are obviously modeled after manta rays, and are designed to be exceptionally large. Coupled with the irony that they are able to 'fly' through air, much like how the manta ray appears to do so in water, the name is thus a befitting one.

The Japanese name of this enemy, Rayray, is merely a pun on the fact that the Mantarrey enemy is modeled after real-life manta rays.
