The Dreamstone is a Key Item in Chrono Trigger. It is referred to as a currency in prehistoric times, and is used to reforge the shattered Masamune.
Crono's party discovers from Belthasar that the Masamune was forged from Dreamstone and that the sword cannot be repaired without this precious stone. However, in the time of 1000 AD, Dreamstone has been lost for ages. Crono travels back in time to 65,000,000 BC to retrieve this stone, which was used at the time as a type of currency due to its value as a rare precious metal.
The Masamune was originally forged in 12,000 BC, at which point Dreamstone still existed. The stone was lost from civilization sometime after the fall of the Kingdom of Zeal.
