Turnip (カブ夫, Kabu) is a sword-bearing living turnip that is dug up by Poshul in Home World after cooling the ground in Another World at Hermit's Hideaway.

Story

Turnip is the walking dream of a sleeping Acacia Dragoon in Viper Manor. After coming into contact with this dragoon, he realizes he has lived the same life as the dream the dragoon describes in his sleep, and Turnip begins to wonder how and why he exists, and if he will disappear when the dragoon awakes from his slumber.

In the end, however, he concluded that as long as he knew he existed, then he would exist in some way shape or form, and concluded that should the dragoon awake, he would exist in that dragoon's dream world once more.

"Turnip's nature and words bring to mind two philosophies on life. That he dreams of the soldier and the soldier dreams of him is a take on Zhuangzi's famous chapter in his book that described an experience in which he dreamt of being a butterfly and afterwards wondered if his life were simply the butterfly dreaming of him... Secondly, Turnip evokes the famous statement of Rene Descartes by noting that as long as he thinks, he exists."[1]

References to Chrono Trigger

  • Turnip carries a sword and even speaks in a similar manner to Frog. He is also similar in size and is even a soldier. (he is the dream of a soldier and a shared element of his personality)
  • His philosophies and analogies about dreams reflect the mindset of Doreen in Enhasa.
