Serge first encounters '''Guile''' (アルフ, ''Alf'') contemplating his plans in a bar in Another Termina. Guile has made a bet with Termina's fortune-teller that he can bring back an item from Viper Manor. Thus, he will be glad to join Serge on his journey to Viper Manor to discover the intentions of the mysterious Lynx. Guile's strength with magic is very effective, especially in his Tech Skills. However, Guile's Element Grid is backwards from most other characters, with less Element spots for earlier levels, and more Element spots for later levels. As a result, Guile proves as a very powerful mage, especially at the end of the game.

A member of the mysterious Magic Guild, he came to El Nido in search of mystery and curiosity; a friend of the Fortune Teller in Termina, he soon learned of Viper Manor and its status as an impregnable fortress. Otherwise, he would have to reveal his face to her. While preparing for his attempt, he met Serge and Kid, who also planned to infiltrate the manor. Judging their usefulness, he decided to accompany them, and from that point on served as a member of the party (though briefly leaving while Serge regained his body from Lynx). While on the quest, Guile displayed exceedingly refined and cultured behavior and speech, and also developed an Element Grid capable of using many advanced techniques. When Serge is searching for a guide to Viper Manor, he may talk to Guile in the bar and he will be happy to join the party, as he has made a bet with the town fortune teller that he can retrieve an object from the Manor and come out alive. He is one of three possible guides to the Manor.
During the planning stages of Chrono Cross, Guile was intended to be Magus in disguise, accompanying Serge to learn the true fate of his sister Schala. This would have paralelled his role in Radical Dreamers as the mysterious magician Magil. However, as more and more characters were added to the game, the developers felt that it would have been too difficult to represent Magus's story well amongst the sea of other characters. Guile's backstory was removed, and he gained his own identity as a mystifying traveler. Guile is regardless the same as Magil in appearance and behavior -- fiercely handsome, interesting, intelligent, good-natured, eloquent, and prone to having a bit of fun. Guile especially excels at the last point in his frequent toasts to enigma and lighthearted bet with the fortune teller.

Along with Kid and Harle, Guile is one of the few playable characters who does not appear in the parallel world. This does not confirm that there is no "other" Guile however, the magician Sneff from Home World recognizes Guile from Another World as being part of the Magic Guild, so it's likely that the character exists in both worlds.

Though Guile himself does not appear in the Chrono Trigger Japanese-only sequel Radical Dreamers on Satellaview, a character named Gil, who has a much similar yet darker appearance appears. Kato also confirmed that Guile is not Magus nor Gil. In Chrono Cross, a copy of Serge's diary from the Radical Dreamers introduction can be found; in the English version, Gil is referred to as Magil.

How to recruit

When arriving in Termina [Another World] for the first time, watch a scene with the statue polisher. Afterwards, find Korcha at the bridge east of there before finding him a 2nd time down by the shrines. He agrees to take you to the destination (Viper Manor Bluffs) but needs a guide. Guile's at the Termina Bar and will join up without too much of a hassle. Nikki and Pierre CANNOT join if Guile does, however.
