The Bao Bao (also known as Winged Ape in the SNES/PS version) is an enemy in Chrono Trigger. First appearing in the Forest Maze in Prehistory, it is a big and rotund monster, resembling the body of a modern gorilla. Bao Bao's skin is gray, which is possible to see in areas without fur, such as the face, hands, and feet. Bao Bao share the same sprite as Cave Ape and the Fossil Ape.

Battle and Strategy[edit | edit source]

Since they are big and strong, they grab a single target with their hands and brutally throw them at another party member, in a Tech called Fling. Bao Bao are easier fought when alone. When accompanied by other creatures, however, Bao Bao is best killed first, since it delivers heavy attacks. The Magic Defense of this creature is slightly lower than its Physical Defense, so it's advisable to use Magical Techs.

Etymology[edit | edit source]

Possibly, Bao Bao is an adaptation of baboon, a primate that is physically similar to it. The word baboon may have been scrambled to make it sound like the call of a primate, or simply to make the name sound more caveman-like.
