Here they take on a brutish form with horns facing downward and it appears like one of them in their demon form except without the robe, puffy lips, and massive biceps. Masa & Mune are beings of unknown species that combine to form the Masamune in both Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross and the Mastermune in just Chrono Cross.

Masa and Mune are shape shifters that, when first encountered, take on the forms of children in the Denadoro Mountains in Trigger. They are encountered in the chapter Tata And The Frog. When you inform them that you wish to have ownership of the Masamune, they will transform into their main demon-like forms. You will battle them both, but only the defeat of one is necessary to procede to the true boss of the Denadoro mountains, Masa & Mune combined. Here they take on a brutish form with horns facing downward and it appears like one of them in their demon form except without the robe, puffy lips, and massive biceps. For victory over the two the player recieves half of the Masamune. They can also be encountered in the Kingdom of Zeal. Often the two are found speaking deep and intellectually about what may happen when Lavos is released. There is also in Enhasa a being that is similar to the two named Doreen whom is in fact their sister.

In Chrono Cross their role is not as important but none the less can be important. If one completes the Dario sidequest in order to get the Mastermune, after Dario is defeated Masa & Mune will appear from the blade revealing evil plagued the sword because it seeped in side while they were sleeping. Doreen shows up yelling at the two for allowing it to happen and ensures it won't happen again by merging with the blade herself and the three also transfer the power of their blade into Serge's first weapon the Sea Swallow turning it into the Mastermune, the most powerful weapon in Chrono Cross.
