Belthasar (ガッシュ, Gash) is a character that appears in both Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross.

Chrono Trigger

In Chrono Trigger, Belthasar is one of the three ancient Gurus of Zeal. Belthasar is the Guru of Reason. Early on when Queen Zeal attempted to raise Lavos, the three Gurus stepped forth and advised her to not do so, and in return they were wared throughout time. Melchior was sent to 1000 AD, Gaspar to the End Of Time, and Belthasar to the future of 2300 AD. Janus was also warped by accident when he rushed in trying to protect Schala, and was sent to the year 600 AD. There in the future Belthasar continued his research and making his machine capable of traveling throughout time, the Epoch. Belthasar gets older and from being by himself with no other humans for so long he begins to turn more and more insane. To keep what remains of himself before he completely loses his mind he puts his own intelligence and behaviors into a Nu by turning it into a robot(or perhaps it was a robot). When Crono and friends first truly meet Belthasar, he is already in his Nu state and he merely shows the party how the Epoch works, gives it to them, and allows them to take off. Later on after the team gets the Chrono Trigger(item), if they return to where they gained the Epoch they get the assistance of Belthasar once more for the climb up Death Peak. However he will only do this if the team has succeeded in getting the doll at Norstein Bekkler's Lab by winning the 40 point game. After Belthasar helps out one last time he requests that he be shut down and reveals he has an off switch on his back.

Chrono Cross

In Chrono Cross, one is lead to believe it is but a mere character whom is also named Belthasar, like Glenn's case. But in fact it is the same Belthasar of Chrono Trigger. When one first meets Belthasar he is welcoming while the girl he is with, Marcy, is not. Later on during the attempted escape with Riddel from the Porre army, Belthasar assists in Serge's escape, only to have the party instead rescued by Grobyc. It isn't until much later in the story that it is revealed that it is the same Belthasar as of Trigger. During the events of Chronopolis it is revealed that Belthasar is in fact the one responsible for and in charge of Project Kid. Also as the keeper of Chronopolis, Belthasar is also the guardian of the Frozen Flame, protecting it from the clutches of the dragons. While his presence isn't always there, he certainly proves to be an extremely important asset to Chrono Cross, especially toward the end of the journey.
