1999 AD is the epic time period from Chrono Trigger when the world is destroyed. 1999 AD is the rise of Lavos.

1999 AD is the only world in Chrono Trigger that is not directly available to explore. While it exists, the only thing to do there is fight Lavos. It can be accessed via the Epoch which will result in the team crashing into Lavos, entirely avoiding the first phase of Lavos but with no way to return or save, there is a unique bucket in the End of Time that can be used to immediately face off with Lavos, or one can travel through the entire Black Omen, defeat Queen Zeal and be faced with Lavos bypassing Lavos Shell's first attack patterns skipping straight to the final attack pattern of the outside of Lavos. No matter how you travel to 1999 AD, the results are the same, you will battle Lavos.

If you get game over from being defeated by Lavos, you will get a different game over sequence then the usual watching the enemies stand and the team all dead. It will start off in a lab where a man known as the Director and two other scientists are at work when suddenly Lavos rises. Locations all over the world are seen with red marks on them on their computer indicating they have been destroyed. The entire planet is marked with massive numbers of red marks and the lab being shown begins to crumble apart and is being destroyed. The director commands the other two to leave immediately and stays, being crushed under the building. During this game over sequence a glimpse of what 1999 AD would look like before the team defeated Lavos would have looked like. 1999 AD takes on a more futuristic metropolis appearance, almost a utopia. There are as 2300 AD suggests domes everywhere, the grass is a very bright green indicating beautiful forest life, plains, etc. Everything looks from the breif glimpses of 1999 AD without Lavos perfect until it shows up.
