The Highwayman is a boss fought in Chrono Cross. Some fans have theorized that this is the ultimate fate of Johnny from Chrono Trigger since the Highwayman appears to be a skeletal enemy with Johnny's automobile body, sunglasses, and mohawk, and because he shows up in the Dead Sea. Since one of his arms is a sawblade and the other is a socket wrench, some think that he went overboard with modifying himself, becoming more and more machine over time until he had no humanity left.

Battle and Strategy
In addition to powerful physical attacks, this boss uses Rampage for very large physical damage on a single party member, as well as ExhaustGas, which targets all party members and has a 60% chance of inflicting the Darkness status effect. It is highly recommended to have a character with BlackOut equipped for this boss fight, as the darkness status can greatly prolong the length of this fight; an undesirable situation given this boss's deadly Rampage attack.

Fan Theory (Unofficial)
Some fans have theorized that this is the ultimate fate of Johnny from Chrono Trigger since the Highwayman appears to be a skeletal enemy with Johnny's automobile body, sunglasses, and mohawk, and because he shows up in the Dead Sea. Since one of his arms is a sawblade and the other is a socket wrench, some think that he went overboard with modifying himself, becoming more and more machine over time until he had no humanity left. Note: appears to be standing over the body of Johnny, thus could also be his ghost (reminiscent of Cyrus from CT).
