A group of neighbours and friends got together under sunny skies on Saturday afternoon for a campfire and shinny hockey game near Rushy Pond in Grand Falls-Windsor. Taking part in the game were Jacob Moore, Christian Smith, Cameron Boone and Jack Cameron.

Ruth Scott of the Legion Ladies Auxiliary looks through the pages of meeting minute books from 1954. She wears the same blue auxiliary blazer as when she joined in 1952, though she may not get the chance to wear it many more times. The Legion Ladies Auxiliary Grand Falls branch has decided to close due to lack of membership.

Reflecting back on over 50 years of membership, Ruth Scott may be retiring her medals, but not her memories, as the women of the Legion Ladies Auxiliary Grand Falls branch prepare to return their 55-year-old charter.
 
From the days when she was a little girl gazing the brown walls of the original meeting place to the days she spent as provincial leader, Ms. Scott has been a member of the Legion Ladies Auxiliary for more than just a portion of her life.  (more)  09/02/09 9:35 AM

It was a big weekend for local hockey players as various teams in the area clued up their respective seasons before heading into the playoffs.
 
The Central Cataracts, who had already finished first in the Central-West Junior Hockey League heading into the weekend's games against the Deer Lake Junior Red Wings, dominated the west coast team winning by scores of 11-3 and 11-4.  (more)  09/02/09 9:40 AM

There are numerous ways to enjoy winter in Newfoundland and Labrador.
 
One of a number of places you can go to enjoy some snowy activities in central Newfoundland is Rafting Newfoundland, which along with many summer activities, offers snowshoeing and snowmobiling tours during the winter months.
 
"We have high-end snowshoes here for our clients that they can use if they are staying at our chalets," said Paul Rose of Rafting Newfoundland. "Snowmobiles aren't in-cluded in the snowmobile tour but we are working on rentals."  (more)  09/02/09 9:40 AM

Last month the province's Minister responsible for business visited Grand Falls-Windsor to deliver a strong message. He is quoted in this paper as saying "the best is yet to come for central Newfoundland." I sincerely hope he's right.
 
Paul Oram was on hand for the Exploits Regional Chamber of Commerce Business Awards held at the Canadian Legion. While he was not specific on government's plans for the region, Minister Oram was quick to point out the importance of the Exploits Valley and Grand Falls-Windsor to the province as a whole.  (more)  09/02/09 9:04 AM

Not-so-sober second thought View comments1
There was a time in this country when the Senate was a place where people with wisdom to provide "sober second thought" on legislative matters and items decided on in the House of Commons debated the usefulness of those matters and made them law.
 
It seems that is no longer the case.
