The Three Gurus (三賢者?) are characters that appear in Chrono Trigger. They lived during Antiquity, served as wise men and advisers to Queen Zeal, and were among the few Enlightened Ones who did not look down on the Earthbound Ones. They are:

  • Belthasar, the Guru of Reason (理の賢者?).
  • Gaspar, the Guru of Time (時の賢者?).
  • Melchior, the Guru of Life (命の賢者?).

Story[edit | edit source]

When the Mammon Machine was activated, the three Gurus were sent to different time periods, presumably by Lavos. Belthasar was sent to the Future, Gaspar was sent to the End of Time, and Melchior was sent to the Present. All three play a large role in aiding Crono, Marle, Lucca, Robo, Frog, Ayla, and Magus in stopping Lavos from destroying the world.

Melchior[edit | edit source]

The first Guru encountered is Melchior. He makes a brief cameo appearance in Leene Square as a weapons merchant. Melchior asks Crono to convince Marle to sell her pendant to him. If Crono agrees (although the pendant will never be sold to Melchior) it will be used as evidence against him in the trial for Marle's alleged kidnap. The fact that Melchior asks for the pendant indicates that, after he was cast out of Zeal after the events at the Ocean Palace, he was aware that the Princess's necklace would transport him back to his own time so he could prevent Queen Zeal from exploiting Schala's power and ultimately harnessing the power of Lavos. Because he was aware of this, it is likely that he played a role in either its creation or how it moved from Schala's hands to that of the Royal Guardian Family. Melchior disappears after the party returns from 600 AD for the first time. He later resides in the Fiend village of Medina, where he sells more potent weapons, the Crimson Blade, being one. Returning to the Middle Ages, the party assists Guardia against Great Ozzie and his fleet of undead minions at Zenan Bridge, subsequently learning that Magus is behind the assault. They discover that Frog is in the area and that he needs the Masamune repaired if they are to stand a chance against the Shadow-magic wielding Prince. Taking the Broken Blade and Broken Hilt  to Melchior's Cabin, they learn that the Dreamstone is need to repair it (because he created it, he knows how it can be repaired). Acquiring a sample in Prehistory from chieftain, Ayla, Melchior repairs the sword with help from mechanics-genius, Lucca.

Belthasar[edit | edit source]

Belthasar is met second. He can be spoken to briefly in Keeper's Dome when the party travels to 2300 AD to escape the Chancellor. There, he is accompanied by a Nu. He boasts of having created the Epoch, Ocean Palace, and other prominent Zeal technologies. He appears later in Last Village. After Schala seals the Gate to Zeal, the player returns to Keeper's Dome, searching for the Wings of Time. Belthasar is no longer present here; it is implied from his Nu and from the Shines past the Sealed Door that he has perished in this Time Line. He uploaded his brain into his Robotic Nu creation, and that creation puts the seats into the Epoch and gives a brief tutorial on how to pilot time with it.

Gaspar[edit | edit source]

The player meets Gaspar last, at the End of Time, where he takes vigil against a lamp post and greets time-travelers. Periodically, he offers advice to Crono and his comrades. At the end of the game, he provides them with the Time Egg.

Naming[edit | edit source]

The three Gurus get their English names from the traditional names given to the Magi who brought gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to the infant Jesus in Christian tradition.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

The Gurus crafted the Pendant(s) used by Schala and Marle.
