Sprigg (スプリガン , Sprigun?) is a character in Chrono Cross. As the enigmatic sole resident of the Temporal Vortex, she is a pointy-earred, blue-skinned, dwarfish woman, wearing a bandanna, green britches, and a yellow shirt with patches.

Story[edit | edit source]

Born in 796 A.D., Sprigg probably researched magic during her life, and was likely born in Medina (being a Fiend). At some point in her life, she met the Fortune Teller of Termina and also developed her Doppelgang ability, enabling her to transform into enemies she defeated. She lived on the outside world for much of her life, probably encountering Sneff and providing him with a berry that enabled him control over rudimentary transformation magic. Eventually, Sprigg was somehow cast into the enigmatic Temporal Vortex, where she eked out a life of quiet thinking and subsistence on a strange fruit and Saururaceae juice. Her displacement there gave her a philosophy of chaos in life. About the time of 1020 A.D. on the outside world, Serge as Lynx was cast into the Vortex as well. Sprigg was pleasantly surprised at the visitor and accompanied him back to the real world, where she visited her old friend, the Fortune Teller, and eventually discovered that her Saururaceae Juice actually came from the water of the Hydra Marshes.

Sprigg may be a uni-dimensional being, dependent on whether she was thrown into the Temporal Vortex before or after the split of dimensions. Though never stated in-game, she is confirmed to be a Fiend via the Missing Piece art book.

How to Recruit[edit | edit source]

As Lynx, shake the tree in the Dimensional Vortex to lure Sprigg out. Sneak into her house before she gets back.

Strengths[edit | edit source]

  • Learns Doppelgang, allowing her to transform in to a wide variety of monsters. This allows access to several Techs and Elements that are either rare or exclusive to these forms, all without having to equip Sprigg herself with any Elements. This also means that Sprigg technically has the most unique Techs of any character.
  • Sprigg can Doppelgang as often as she wants to, which makes her the only character that can change her innate Element on the fly. Changing forms also removes status effects and resets her Element Grid.
  • She is the only character that can capture enemies for use in Doppelgang and the Grand Slam tournament without having the Forget-Me-Not Pot accessory equipped. To capture enemies, she must simply deliver the finishing blow to an enemy in her normal, non-transformation state.
  • Learns Triple Tech (as Slash)

Weaknesses[edit | edit source]

  • Smallest Element Grid, as well as underwhelming stats when not transformed.
  • Actually using Doppelgang takes time. It is a level 5 Tech, meaning Sprigg has to spend Stamina and turns to build up the Grid and more to transform. The Dreamer's set of accessories can mitigate this, but they take up an accessory slot and aren't easy to come by.
  • Doppelganged monsters use their offensive and defensive stats instead of Sprigg's. This means that early transformations tend to fade in power rather quickly, as there is no way to increase the stats outside of buffs.
  • The list of available transformations is strictly limited to the monsters you can face and catch at the time. Slash, Flea, and Ozzie, the best transformations, can only be obtained on a New Game+ file, and the bosses are the hardest standard battle for a New Game+ team to face, so defeating them leaves little to actually use the forms against.
  • Learns only one Single Tech Skill by herself.

Etymology[edit | edit source]

Sprigg is a variation of sprig, which is a leafy shoot or twig. Since Sprigg is a Green Element and a generally woodsy being, this name fits nicely.

A "spriggan" is also a faery from English lore known for its ugliness and tricky nature (e.g., leaving their own ugly children in cribs as they steal human children). The Japanese name スプリガン (sprigan) and Sprigg's appearance lend themselves to this reference.
