Atropos XR is a boss that appears in the Geno Dome in the Future. Unlike the other R-Series robots, she is pink and wears a blue ribbon. She is also the only female R-Series robot encountered. Previously the girlfriend of Robo, Mother Brain reprogrammed her to despise humans and human-sympathizers. In the most common ending for Chrono Trigger (where the Epoch is not used against Lavos), Atropos XR is seen intact with Robo in the altered version of 2300 A.D.
This battle is a one-on-one between Robo and Atropos XR. Defeating Atropos wins Robo her ribbon, which grants a permanent +3 Speed boost and +10 Magic Defense boost.
Battle and Strategy[edit | edit source]
Atropos is fought one-on-one with Robo. Because she is devoid of an Element, she does not have a predetermined weakness. Along this vein, she exploits many of the same techs Robo uses in battle, such as Cure Beam and Robo Tackle. Most often, Atropos will cast Rocket Punch and heal using Cure Beam when her Hit Points reach a critical low. It is advised that Robo use Robo Tackle and heal using Cure Beam every other turn, occasionally using Ethers when his Magic Points run out. Using Mid-Tonics or Full Tonics are pleasantly alternatives to healing spells primarily to reserve MP for additional Robo Tackles or to heal for larger amounts, thus freeing up extra turns for physical strikes. All in all, the battle should run smoothly following the above tactic.
Alternatively, instead of Robo Tackle, Rapid-Fire Fist could be used, as to do more damage. However, this does lead to more MP usage. Atropos has lower Magical Defense than Physical, so Proximity Bomb and Electrocute should be used if unlocked at that point in the game.
Also, be warned that Atropos will self-destruct at the conclusion of the battle, so remain at high health near the conclusion.
Etymology[edit | edit source]
Atropos is the oldest of the Three Fate Sisters in Greek Mythology. It was Atropos who chose the mechanism of death and ended the life of each mortal by cutting their thread with her "abhorred shears"; Atropine is a medication used to treat heart problems; XR is Rx backwards, the symbol for pharmaceuticals; and "Atrophy" is a word used to describe auto-deterioration. All of these hint that Atropos XR and Robo suffered an ill fate, where love and death were the fulcrum.
